Kiambu Women Rep Defends New University Funding Model

Kiambu Women’s Representative Ann Muratha has defended the new university funding model, which has caused quite a stir among Kenyans. This model, introduced by President Ruto in May last year, aims to address the financial challenges faced by public universities and TVET institutions in Kenya.

During an NG-CDF bursary event in Kiambaa constituency, hosted by area MP John Njuguna (Kawanjiku), Muratha emphasized that the new funding approach offers a sustainable solution that the previous model couldn’t achieve.

She pointed out that universities like Egerton, Moi, and the University of Nairobi were on the verge of closure because funds were previously distributed equally among all students. The new model, however, allocates funds based on merit.

Muratha, who is also a member of the education committee in Parliament, acknowledged the concerns raised by many Kenyans about the new model. Her comments come amid ongoing discussions about possible amendments to the model, which has faced criticism from various stakeholders.

The new funding model categorizes students into four groups based on financial need: vulnerable, extremely needy, needy, and less needy. Each category receives different amounts of funding.

However, many students have found themselves in categories that do not fully cover the fees for their chosen university programs.
