KRA, Eastleigh traders partner to boost tax compliance

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intensified efforts to improve tax compliance by engaging traders in Eastleigh through a consultative meeting aimed at addressing long-standing challenges affecting businesses in the area.

The meeting, held in partnership with the Eastleigh Business District Association (EBDA), brought together tax officials and members of the business community to discuss concerns surrounding compliance, particularly the adoption of the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS).

Among the key issues raised was the low uptake of eTIMS, which has affected the issuance of compliant invoices by traders. This gap has not only impacted businesses operating within Eastleigh but also traders across the country who rely on supplies from the area and require proper documentation to claim business expenses.

KRA Commissioner for Micro and Small Taxpayers, George Obell, noted that the widespread use of cash transactions and failure to issue receipts has contributed to reduced visibility of business activities, leading to lower compliance levels.

He said the Authority will now step up efforts to support traders by facilitating PIN registration, tax filing, and onboarding onto eTIMS to enhance transparency and create a level playing field.

“We want to ensure traders are fully supported to comply with tax requirements while also making the process simpler and more accessible,” he said.

The meeting also highlighted language barriers and complex tax procedures as major obstacles preventing traders from meeting their obligations. EBDA Secretary General Omar Hussein pointed out that many traders struggle to understand tax requirements due to limited proficiency in official languages, calling for more inclusive communication strategies.

In response, KRA pledged to deploy officers who are conversant with local dialects to bridge the communication gap and improve engagement with traders. The Authority also announced plans to set up service desks within shopping malls across Eastleigh to bring services closer to businesses.

Deputy Commissioner for Tax Base Expansion, Esther Wahome, encouraged traders to adopt eTIMS, noting that the system is applicable to all businesses and plays a key role in improving transaction visibility and voluntary compliance.

On his part, EBDA Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Adan welcomed the collaboration, affirming the association’s commitment to supporting awareness campaigns and facilitating the establishment of KRA service points.

As part of the outcome, KRA will roll out an on-ground compliance support programme in Eastleigh this month, deploying officers to assist traders with registration, filing, and tax education. The initiative is expected to strengthen compliance while fostering trust between the Authority and the business community.
