Gates Foundation Withdraws from The Host Country Agreement

The Gates Foundation, officially known as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been an important partner in Kenya’s development for over two decades. Its work aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on areas such as health, agriculture, gender equality, and economic growth.

In the health sector, the foundation has made significant contributions. It has supported initiatives to improve primary healthcare, combat infectious diseases, and enhance maternal and child health. For example, it has funded programs that increase vaccine access and strengthen healthcare systems. As a result, vulnerable populations now have access to essential medical services.

In addition, the Gates Foundation has invested heavily in agriculture. By introducing drought-resistant seeds and innovative farming methods, the foundation is helping smallholder farmers adapt to climate change and improve their productivity. These efforts aim to tackle food insecurity, which affects millions in Kenya.

Moreover, the foundation has prioritized gender equality and family planning. Consequently, the Kenyan government has taken actionable steps to address gender inequality.

Despite its impactful work, the Gates Foundation recently encountered legal challenges. In October 2024, the Kenyan government formalized a Host Country Agreement that granted the foundation diplomatic privileges for smoother operations. However, the Law Society of Kenya contested this move, leading to a court case that temporarily suspended these privileges.

By April 2025, both the foundation and the Kenyan government decided to withdraw from the Host Country Agreement. Although this decision removed certain privileges, the foundation emphasized that its activities in Kenya would remain unaffected. It reaffirmed its commitment to improving health, agriculture, and economic development through collaboration with local communities and partners.
