Kenya Strengthens Public Health with New Disease Surveillance Institute

Kenya has taken a major step in improving its health system by launching the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI). Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale unveiled the institute, which will boost disease surveillance, emergency response, health research, and policy coordination.

KNPHI will centralize key health functions that were previously scattered across different agencies. This shift eliminates inefficiencies and ensures faster responses to health threats.

The institute will oversee the National public health laboratories, zoonotic disease management, disease surveillance, emergency health operations

With these divisions working together, Kenya can better detect, prevent, and respond to pandemics and outbreaks.

During the launch, CS Duale stressed the need for strong health institutions. He pointed to lessons learned from COVID-19 and Ebola, highlighting the importance of preparedness.

Several global health organizations have pledged support for KNPHI, including: World bank, Africa CDC, Amref Health Africa, International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI). National Assembly Health Committee Chairperson James Nyikal assured that Parliament will pass laws to formalize the institute’s role, securing its future.

KNPHI will enhance Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by prioritizing preventive and promotive healthcare. With centralized data and risk monitoring, Kenya can address health threats quickly, reducing hospital overcrowding and improving public health.

The launch event drew a wide array of dignitaries and stakeholders, including Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno (Environment and Climate Change), Health Committee Chair in the National Assembly Dr. James Nyikal, Council of Governors CEO Ms. Mary Mwiti, and senior representatives from government agencies and development partners.
