Lari Boys High School has been closed indefinitely following a fire incident that occurred on Saturday night, reportedly started by students. The inferno destroyed the administration block, several classrooms, and science laboratories, causing damage estimated in the millions.
According to sources, the unrest began after students were denied access to musical instruments during the night. Chaos erupted, and residents who tried to respond to the fire alarm were met with hostility, with students allegedly hurling stones to keep them away.
Eunice Kinyanjui, a neighbour, said the students dismantled security lights and CCTV cameras before setting parts of the school ablaze. Dormitories were reportedly spared to avoid damage to their personal belongings.
No fatalities were reported, but a few students who sustained minor injuries were taken to hospital and have since been discharged.
By Sunday morning, parents arrived in large numbers to pick up their children, most of whom had spent the night outside the school compound.
