A Kenyan High Court has issued a warrant of arrest against a British national accused of murdering Agnes Wanjiru in Nanyuki more than ten years ago.
The ruling follows confirmation by the prosecution that the suspect has already been charged with murder but has repeatedly failed to appear in court.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on the night of March 31 to April 1, 2012, at a hotel in Nanyuki, Laikipia County. Wanjiru, then 21, was later found dead in a septic tank at the lodge, sparking outrage locally and internationally.
In his directive, the presiding judge stressed the need to uphold the integrity of the judicial process. He further ordered that the names of the accused and witnesses listed in the evidence bundle not be published, saying the restrictions are meant to guard against prejudicial reporting.
The warrant is seen as a major step forward in a case long overshadowed by delays and diplomatic sensitivities. For over a decade, Wanjiru’s family and human rights advocates have pressed for accountability, accusing authorities of denying justice because of the suspect’s foreign status.
The court’s decision now shifts attention to the extradition process, which will require cooperation between Nairobi and London. For Wanjiru’s family, the latest orders renew hope that justice, delayed for more than ten years, may finally be within reach.
