At least 26 million Kenyans have been enrolled under the Social Health Authority (SHA), Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced.
Speaking in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County, during the launch of the Taifa Care initiative, CS Duale said the milestone was achieved through aggressive county-level registration drives since the rollout of Taifa Care on October 1, 2024.
He urged county governments to sustain the momentum to ensure no Kenyan is left behind in accessing affordable and quality healthcare.
Duale also revealed plans to upgrade JM Kariuki Memorial Hospital from a Level-4 to a Level-5 facility, enabling residents to access specialized services without traveling to neighbouring counties. Other sub-county health centres will also benefit from similar upgrades.
The CS called on Kenyans to separate health reforms from politics, saying the government is committed to fixing service delivery and improving public healthcare access.
SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi reported that the contributory fund has already collected Ksh70 billion since its inception, a notable increase compared to the defunct NHIF, which collected Ksh45 billion in its lifespan.
Out of the 26 million registered Kenyans, she noted, 890,000 are from the informal sector, while 4 million are salaried contributors, bringing the total number of active payers to 4.8 million.
