The construction of the Gikambura Modern Market in Kikuyu Sub-County, Kiambu County, which began in May 2024, has marked a major milestone in efforts to uplift local traders and modernize business spaces in the region.
Once complete, the facility will accommodate over 340 traders, offering them a clean, safe, and well-organized environment to conduct business. The project is part of ongoing initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable urban development across Kiambu.
The ultra-modern market will feature 100 shops, 208 stalls, a social hall, meeting rooms, offices, an ICT hub, a food court and kitchen, barbershop and salon, washrooms, a crèche, and a butchery. It will also include key amenities such as a cold room, enforcement office, trash cubicle, power room, ample parking, and a children’s play area making it one of the most comprehensive market facilities in the county.
Currently, 45 local residents have been employed at the site, gaining both income and hands-on experience in construction and market management.
Officials say the Gikambura Modern Market will serve as a key trading hub for the agriculturally rich Kikuyu region, known for its thriving crop farming and dairy production. By integrating facilities for value addition and digital access through the ICT hub, the market is expected to open up new opportunities for small businesses, farmers, and youth entrepreneurs.
The project represents Kiambu County’s growing commitment to empowering communities through infrastructure that not only supports trade but also enhances dignity, safety, and economic growth.
As completion draws nearer, the Gikambura Modern Market stands as a beacon of transformation a space where local enterprise meets modern innovation to shape a stronger, more inclusive future for Kikuyu and the wider Kiambu region.
