Gov’t bans alcohol sales in supermarkets, restaurants, home deliveries; legal drinking age raised to 21

Kenyans who enjoy their drink will now have fewer options as the government introduces sweeping new restrictions on alcohol sales and consumption.

In a newly released policy dated July 2025, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has banned the sale of alcohol in supermarkets, restaurants, online platforms, and residential areas. Home delivery services, once popular in urban areas, are also outlawed.

The policy identifies the following places and methods where selling and consuming alcohol is now prohibited:

  1. Vending machines
  2. Public beaches, parks, amusement and recreational facilities
  3. Medical, sports, and transport facilities including bus stops, petrol stations, railway stations, ferries, and highways
  4. Hawking
  5. Online platforms and home deliveries
  6. Supermarkets
  7. Outlets associated with children, like toy shops
  8. Residential premises
  9. Restaurants
  10. All learning institutions

Drinking alcohol in any of these locations is also banned.

In a major shift, the legal drinking age has been raised from 18 to 21. No one under 21 will be allowed to consume alcohol or enter alcohol-selling premises, even if accompanied by an adult.

The policy also takes aim at the influence of celebrities and digital personalities. Social media influencers, models, media figures, entertainers, and athletes are now barred from endorsing or promoting alcohol, drugs, or related substances.

Additionally, businesses are no longer allowed to name sports teams after alcohol brands, or sponsor tournaments, leagues, or national teams using alcohol-related branding.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, in the policy foreword, described the new strategy as a result of wide consultations across various sectors.

“This policy is the culmination of an extensive, inclusive, and collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders across Kenya, from national and county governments to civil society, faith-based groups, the private sector, and the general public,” he wrote. “Together, we have forged a unified approach to prevent, mitigate, and control the devastating impact of alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse in our nation.”
