Kiambu constructs storm water drainage in Gachororo, Juja Ward

Residents of Gachororo in Juja Ward are set to benefit from a major infrastructure project aimed at addressing persistent flooding that has disrupted daily life in the area for years.

The Kiambu County Government, in partnership with the World Bank, has commenced construction of a storm water drainage system under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme. The project seeks to manage surface runoff and significantly reduce the impact of flash floods that have affected homes, schools and access to essential services.

For years, heavy rains have left parts of Gachororo impassable, with residents struggling to access the nearby health facility and children facing difficulties getting to school safely. The situation has also posed risks to property and livelihoods, especially during peak rainy seasons.

County officials say the new drainage system is designed to provide a long-term solution by improving water flow and preventing accumulation in residential areas.

During a recent site visit, the County Climate Change Unit led by Director Esther Kaguima assessed the progress of the works and engaged stakeholders on the ground. The team held discussions with local leaders, members of the community, the Project Management Committee and the contractor to ensure the project is on track.

Officials emphasised the importance of proper implementation, noting that quality and efficiency will be key in delivering a system that meets the needs of residents.

Speaking during the visit, leaders noted that the project goes beyond infrastructure, as it directly impacts safety, mobility and access to services such as healthcare and education.

Once complete, the drainage system is expected to ease movement within the area, allowing residents to access the Gachororo Health Facility without disruption and enabling learners to attend school consistently, even during heavy rains.

The project is also expected to improve sanitation and reduce health risks associated with stagnant water, which has been a concern for residents in the past.

Under the leadership of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, Kiambu County has continued to prioritise climate resilience initiatives aimed at protecting communities from the effects of extreme weather conditions.

Residents have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the project will finally provide a lasting solution to the challenges they have endured for years.

The Gachororo drainage system forms part of broader efforts by the county to invest in sustainable infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its residents.
