A 19-year-old girl from Red Soil village, Mwea East, Kirinyaga County, died by suicide. Before her death, she called her father and sister, urging them to return home.
According to reports, Rachael Mwihaki had reached out to her sister, Regina Ng’endo. She claimed their mother was in distress and wanted to take her own life. She also called her father, Peter Mwangi, who had been away for days. Tragically, they found her hanging from the bedroom ceiling when they arrived home.
“She told me to come quickly because our mother wanted to commit suicide,” Ng’endo said. “I told her I had no fare. She sent the money, but when I arrived, I found her dangling from the ceiling.”
The tragedy has shocked the community. Local leaders and mental health advocates are concerned about rising suicide cases in the region. Kamau Muchira, Chairman of the Counselling and Psychological Association Kirinyaga branch, has called for urgent mental health interventions. The incident happened during Mental Health Awareness Month.
Authorities at Wang’uru Police Station responded quickly after villagers raised the alarm. Investigations are ongoing. The young woman’s body has been taken to Kibugi funeral home.
