Kenya Forest Service unveils new ranger housing and road upgrades at Karura Forest headquarters

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has rolled out key infrastructure upgrades at its Karura Forest headquarters to improve the welfare of rangers and enhance conservation efforts.

In a statement issued Monday, August 25, KFS confirmed the construction of 14 modern housing units for rangers, replacing the aging timber quarters that had fallen into disrepair.

The agency also announced progress on a 3-kilometre tarmacked road network within the headquarters. However, the final 200 metres leading to the rangers’ quarters are still under construction and are expected to be completed in September 2025.

“These projects are part of the Service’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure and boosting the welfare of its staff,” KFS noted.

While the developments have been welcomed, they have reignited debates about infrastructure within forested areas. Environmentalists had previously voiced concerns that road works could lead to tree losses and further encroachment into protected land.

KFS has faced scrutiny in the past over controversial projects in Mau and Ngong Forests. In May 2025, the Green Belt Movement raised the alarm over reports of a luxury hotel being developed in Ngong Road Forest.

The Service later clarified the facility was a camp comprising tents on semi-permanent structures, approved under the Ngong Road Forest Management Plan. According to KFS, the project underwent a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and was subjected to public consultations with the Community Forest Association before being licensed.
