Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola has threatened to sue Captain (Rtd) Kung’u Muigai, cousin to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, over viral bribery allegations.
In a demand letter dated September 16, Justice Lenaola dismissed the claims as “false, malicious and intended to damage” his reputation. The remarks were linked to a viral TikTok video in which Captain Muigai alleged the judge accepted a Sh1 million bribe in a supermarket parking lot while presiding over a commercial dispute between a firm and a bank.
The judge’s legal team argued that the accusations were “derogatory, threatening and a calculated scheme to injure” a judicial officer who has served for over 22 years. Lenaola has demanded that Captain Muigai pull down the viral video, issue a public apology, and refrain from making further defamatory remarks.
By the time of the notice, the TikTok clip had drawn over 6,200 likes and 1,700 reposts, amplifying public debate on judicial integrity.
Captain Muigai, however, has stood by his comments and retained city lawyer and former Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi to represent him in the case.
The Judiciary has also responded through its spokesperson Paul Ndemo, dismissing the allegations as baseless. Ndemo stressed that no credible evidence of misconduct has ever been produced and pointed out that previous complaints before the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had found no wrongdoing.
He added that dissatisfaction with rulings cannot be equated to corruption.
The looming court battle sets the stage for a high-profile legal showdown that will once again test public confidence in Kenya’s Judiciary.
