Murang’a Police step up child safety drive with road awareness campaign to curb rising school accidents

Police officers in Murang’a County have intensified efforts to curb the increasing number of road accidents involving school children through a new sensitization campaign focused on safety education.

Led by County Police Commander Kemboi Kimaiyo, the officers on Monday visited Technology Primary School, where they held lively discussions with pupils on safe road use and personal protection. The initiative follows a series of tragic incidents that have seen children lose their lives or sustain serious injuries in recent months.

“We have had a chance to visit Technology Primary School to sensitize pupils on road safety measures,” said Commander Kimaiyo. “Several accidents involving children have been reported, and we saw the need to act before more lives are lost.”

Kimaiyo disclosed that in July 2025, two pupils one in Grade Two and another in Grade One were killed in separate accidents, while at least five other cases were recorded across the county.

The officers also used the opportunity to educate pupils on drug abuse, gender-based violence, and crime prevention. Kimaiyo urged children to avoid loitering, refuse gifts from strangers, and always stay close to their parents or guardians.

“Such behaviours expose children to danger,” he warned. “We want them to understand how to protect themselves both on and off the road.”

Deputy Police Commander Geoffrey Ruheni said early awareness was critical in preventing future tragedies. He also cautioned pupils against online dangers such as cyberbullying and unsafe websites.

“Education is key to prevention,” Ruheni said. “By teaching a few, we hope the message will reach many more through their siblings and peers.”

Ruheni further appealed to drivers to obey speed limits, avoid driving under the influence, and ensure they are well-rested before getting behind the wheel.

“Simple discipline on the road can save lives,” he added.

County Traffic Enforcement Officer Stephen Wainaina called on parents, teachers, and the community to make road safety part of daily conversations. He reminded motorists to be especially cautious around schools and residential areas.

“Every child’s safety depends on a driver’s vigilance,” said Wainaina. “Everyone must take responsibility we must all be keepers of our children.”

Technology Primary School Head Teacher Beatrice Wachira commended the police for taking time to engage learners directly, saying hearing safety messages from law enforcement officers makes a lasting impression.

“When children hear these messages from police officers, it reinforces what we teach them in school,” she said, adding that the campaign will go a long way in promoting a culture of safety among learners.

The police have pledged to continue visiting schools across Murang’a County to strengthen community awareness and ensure every child gets home safely.
