The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has responded after a video circulated online showing a large python allegedly crossing a path in Karura Forest. The footage, which shows the snake slithering across a murram road into thick vegetation, has raised concern among visitors to the popular urban forest.
In a statement on Friday, KFS said it is aware of the video but cannot yet verify its authenticity or the timing of the sighting. The agency confirmed that pythons have been sighted in Karura in 2019 and 2022 but stressed that the current footage has not been authenticated.
“While pythons have occasionally been spotted in Karura, there is no verified information to confirm this particular sighting,” KFS said, urging visitors to exercise caution. The service advised walkers and joggers to remain on marked trails, keep pets leashed, and report any sightings immediately to forest rangers stationed at the gates.
KFS also noted it is collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor wildlife activity and plan interventions if necessary. Covering more than 1,000 hectares, Karura Forest remains a key green space for Nairobi residents and tourists, offering scenic trails, waterfalls, historic caves, and birdwatching opportunities.
The agency has asked the public for patience while investigations continue, stressing that visitor safety is a top priority.
